No. 2 Archbishop Spalding was waged in a scoreless battle with Mount de Sales until the 65th minute of Tuesday’s IAAM A Conference soccer quarterfinal contest, before the host Cavaliers netted two scores to advance with a 2-0 victory over the Sailors.

Both goals were netted by Madeline Ostrowski.  On the first she was headed home a nifty cross from Maggie Morrison.  She then ice the contest, with four minutes to play, when defied an impossible, angle from 15 yards, to beat the goalkeeper inside the far post.

Spalding now will have another tough challenge when it meets No. 6 John Carroll on Thursday at Spalding.  The Patriots eliminated Maryvale Prep, 2-0, Tuesday in Bel Air.

The top half of the bracket is also setup for a great semifinal match, as No. 1 McDonogh will host No. 3 Mercy.  The Eagles defeated IND, 5-0, while the Magic downed Notre Dame Prep, 3-0.

Alexis Prior-Brown paced Mercy’s win with two goals and an assist.  Hannah Goff also netted a goal for the Magix, while Lexi Niedoba and Megan Bartenfelter had assists.  Early in the game, however, NDP put a lot of pressure on Mercy and created several great chances.  The Blazers, however, fell back once Prior-Brown got on track.

Thursday’s games will be played for a spot in Saturday night’s championship match, will be played at Anne Arundel Community College at 7:00 p.m.
