In its season-opener, Old Mill High didn’t look like defending Class 4A state football champions. It’s been a different story the last four weeks for the Patriots.

No. 5 Old Mill won its fourth straight decision, 35-19, on Monday evening in Harwood. Senior running back Demond Brown rushed for 161 yards and two touchdowns, and Rob Chesson added 150 yards and two scores.

The Patriots (4-1 overall, 4-1 Anne Arundel County) piled up 28 second quarter points for a 35-7 halftime advantage. Since losing the season opener to No. 2 Arundel, Old Mill has outscored its opponents, 174-25.

Brown and Chesson scored on short runs, then Joe McCargo returned a fumble 31 yards, giving the Patriots a 21-0 cushion in the second quarter. Davonte Burke got Southern with a 63-yard touchdown run.

A six-yard by Brown followed by a 18-yard touchdown run from Chesson, made it 35-7 at intermission. Burke added scoring runs of 21 and 23 yards in the second half.

Burke finished with 140 yards for the Bulldogs (3-2, 3-2 Anne Arundel), who will host Northeast Friday evening. Southern stands fourth in the Class 2A South Region standings.

Old Mill travels to South River in a crucial match in the 4A East Region standings. The Patriots are fourth with South River fifth.
