State volleyball match-ups nearly set
The 2017 MPSAA volleyball tournaments have each reached the state semifinal round and that can mean only one thing: It’s off to Ritchie Coliseum on the campus of the University of Maryland for the state semifinals and finals.
In Class 1A Western Tech swept Dunbar in the North Region final and will meet the winner of Saturday’s West Region final between Fort Hill and Smithsburg, on Nov. 15th (6:00 p.m.) in the first 1A semifinal. At 8:00 p.m. the same evening, Frederick Douglass-PG will face Perryville in the other semifinal. Perryville advanced with a 3-0 win over North Dorchester in the East Region final.
In 2A the semifinals will take place on Monday, Nov. 13. At 6:00 p.m., Hereford, which swept Crossland for the North Region title, will face Oakdale, winner of the West Region. Rising Sun is also in the 2A state semis after winning the East Region with a 3-0 win over Queen Anne’s. Rising Sun will face South Region champion La Plata.
The 3A semifinals will take place on Tuesday, Nov. 14th. At 6:00 p.m., Towson, which swept Bel Air in the North Region final, will face Westminster, which also swept to a regional title, downing Tuscarora in the West. At 8:00 p.m., Atholton, a 3-2 winner over J.M. Bennett in the East Region championship match, will battle South Region champion Northern-Calvert.
Only one local team reached the 4A semifinals, as Arundel defeated South River, 3-1, in the East Region title match. The Wildcats will face Eleanor Roosevelt on Nov. 16th at 8:00 p.m. In the North Region final, Howard dropped a heartbreaking 3-2 decision to Sherwood, which will face West champion Northwest in the other 4A semifinal.
