Scorpions advance to the 2A football state quarterfinals

In a wild affair that saw the two teams trade touchdowns throughout the contest, No. 19 Oakland Mills pulled out a 42-41 win over visiting Walkersville of Frederick County, in overtime Friday night, to advance to the 2a football state quarterfinals.

The teams ended the fourth quarter tied 35-35 and the Scorpions (9-1) won the overtime coin toss and elected to go on offense first. They scored on a 4-yard run by John Tatum to take 42-35 lead. Walkersville countered with a touchdown of their own, but the extra point kick missed, allowing Oakland Mills to survive and advance.

The Scorpions led 21-14 at the half, but could not shake the Lions.

Walkerville (7-4) tied the game in the third quarter on a 1-yard run by Jae’sean Fullton, but Oakland Mills went right back in front when Shane King returned the kickoff 59 yards for a touchdown.

Later in the third quarter the Lions got even once again, 28-28, on a 9-yard touchdown run by Jeremiah Franklin. In the fourth, Oakland Mills took its run with a 4-yard scoring run from Kanye Holland, but with just three minutes to play in the fourth, Franklin scored on a 3-yard run for Walkersville to setup the overtime.

The Scorpions will be in action again next Friday against an opponent to be determined after the MPSSAA re-seeds the 8 remaining teams.
