The final weekend of the public high school regular season starts Friday afternoon. While game plans are a given, success or failure for several teams looking to extend their season will come down to something else.
A calculator. Sixty-four teams will be chosen for the state tournament via a point system with the top four teams in each region (East, North, South and West) in four classifications.
A victory by a team over Class 4A school nets eight points, seven for 3A, six for 2A and five for 1A. A team also receives a bonus point for each victory by a team it’s defeated.
Eighteen teams already has its postseason ticket punched while 16 will have to take care of business on the field, and in most cases, get some help.
Here’s the overview of those teams. These are only projections because of fluidity involving bonus points.
The pairings for the state tournament will be announced Sunday morning.
CLASS 1A
East Region
Bohemia Manor (Current place in region standings: 1st)
Status: Qualified. Clinches region top-seed with win or loss by Havre de Grace.
Havre de Grace (2nd)
Status: Qualified. Clinches region top-seed with win and Bohemia Manor loss.
Patterson Mill (3rd)
Status: In win with over Rising Sun or loss by Perryville and or Cambridge-South Dorchester. Out with loss and victories by Cambridge-SD and Perryville.
Perryville (4th)
Status: In with win over Edgewood or Cambridge-SD loss. Out with loss and Cambridge-SD win. Can move to No. 3 seed with win and loss by Patterson Mill.
North Region
Forest Park (1st)
Status: Qualified. Clinches overall top-seed in Class 1A with win over IBE.
Dunbar (2nd)
Status: Qualified. Could claim overall top-seed in Class 1A with win over Digital Harbor and Forest Park loss.
W.E.B. DuBois (3rd)
Status: In with win over Southside Academy or loss by Forestville.
Southside (5th)
Status: In with win over DuBois.
Northwestern (6th)
Status: In with win over Patterson and loss by Forestville combined with Southside/WEB DuBois loser.
North Region
Western Tech (1st)
Status: Qualified. Clinches No. 1 seed in Class 1A with win over Loch Raven and Forest Park loss.
New Town (3rd)
Status: In with win over Lansdowne or loss by Catoctin or Sparrows Point.
Sparrows Point (5th)
Status: In with win over Pikesville and loss by Catoctin or New Town.
CLASS 2A
East Region
Fallston (3rd)
Status: Qualified. Will play at either Queen’s Anne or Kent Island in region first-round next weekend.
North Region
Eastern Tech (1st)
Status: Qualified. Can move to No. 2 overall seed in Class 2A with win over Patuxent and losses by Kent Island, Middletown and Queen’s Anne.
City College (2nd)
Status: Qualified. Clinches No. 2 seed in region seed with win over Poly or Douglass loss.
Douglass (3rd)
Status: Qualified. Clinches No. 2 seed in region with win over Southwestern and City College loss.
Dundalk (4th)
Status: Clinches No. 4 seed in region with win over Owings Mills or loss by Edmondson.
Edmondson (5th)
Status: Clinches No. 4 seed in region with win over Lake Clifton and Dundalk loss.
South Region
Hammond (2nd)
Status: Qualified. Clinches No. 2 seed in region with win over Howard or loss by Douglass-Prince George’s. Could move to region No.1 seed with win and loss by McDonough.
Southern-Anne Arundel (4th)
Status: Clinches No. 4 seed in region with win over Arundel or loss by Gwynn Park.
CLASS 3A
East Region

Status: Qualified. Can move to overall No. 2 seed in Class 3A with win over Mount Hebron and losses by North Harford and Westlake.
Atholton (2nd)
Status: Qualified. Clinches No. 2 seed in region and first-round home game vs. Wilde Lake with win over Wildecats Friday evening.
Wilde Lake (3rd)
Status: Qualified. Clinches No. 2 seed in region and first-round home game vs. Atholton with win over Raiders Friday evening.
Howard (4th)
Status: In with wins over Hammond or losses by Stephen Decatur and James M. Bennett.
North Region
North Harford (1st)
Status: Qualified. Clinches No. 1 seed with win over or loss by Hereford. Win also clinches overall No. 2 seed in 3A.
Hereford (2nd)
Status: Qualified. Clinches region No. 1 seed with win over Perry Hall and North Harford loss.
Franklin (3rd)
Status: Qualified. Could move to No. 2 seed in region with win over Kenwood and Hereford loss.
Catonsville (4th)
Status: Clinches No. 4 seed in region with win over Towson or loss by Poly.
Poly (5th)
Status: Clinches No. 4 seed in region with win over City College and Catonsville loss. Could get in with Catonsville win depending on bonus points.
CLASS 4A
East Region
Arundel (1st)
Status: Qualified. Clinches overall No. 2 seed in 4A with win over Southern-AA. Can move to overall No. 1 with win and loss by Suitland.
Old Mill (2nd)
Status: Qualified. Clinches No. 2 seed in region with win over Broadneck or loss by North Point.

Status: Qualified. Clinches No. 2 seed in region with win over Old Mill.
North Region
Patterson (2nd)
Status: Qualified. Clinches No. 2 seed in region with win over Northwestern. Gets No. 1 seed with win and loss by Urbana.
