Gaels claim Florida holiday tourney title; Brelsford and Edokpayi earn honors


Tyler Brelsford had 23 points and four assists and Jason Edokpayi added a double-double, leading Mount St. Joseph High to a 64-50 victory over Florida’s Mater Academy to win the Junior Orange Bowl Classic at Palmetto High in Miami Monday evening.

The Gaels (11-2 overall) led 32-22 at halftime en route to their seventh straight victory. The Irvington school defeated Pennsylvania’s Mount Lebanon and Miami’s North Florida in the tournament.

Brelsford, a George Washington University recruit, and Edokpayi were selected to the all-tournament team. Edokpayi, who will play for Fairfield next season, finished with 12 points and 11 rebounds Monday.

The Gaels return to MIAA A Conference action Friday at Boys’ Latin School, and against No. 12 John Carroll School Sunday at Smith Center.
