In last year’s MPSSAA State Tournament, the 1A/2A and 3A/4A North Regions were not among the strongest regions, but this year, the teams from the North are looking to put their stamp on the state’s biggest stage.

Returning six state place-winners, the 1A/2A North Region is taking to Dundak High School in Baltimore County to crown their champions and four representatives from each weightclass for the following weekend’s state tournament field.

Owings Mills will try to repeat its domination of the regional competition, much in the same way it dismantled Baltimore County, with Taran Carr and Demetrious and Larry Johnson looking to improve on their state placements last year.

The larger-schools region, 3A/4A North, didn’t see much success in the state tourney, and returns three place-winners to the region this year at Patapsco High School in Baltimore County.

Tuscarora enters the regional weekend with three No. 1 seeds, including returning state bronze medalist Wenzlaff at 152, hoping to dethrone last year’s regional winner Urbana, who’s No. 1 seeds lie in Nick Frank and Joe Rimel.

Shawn Murphey will have to battle to get back to the state finals, ranked second at 125 behind Hereford’s Swiger.

Hereford holds another two No. 1 seeds in Gregory (112) and Ramsel (130).
