All-Metro selection Katlyn Axenfeld stepped up when her team needed her most. Tied in a scoreless game for 96 minutes with No. 17 Centennial, Axenfeld scored the game-winning goal to help No.8 Reservoir slip by the Eagles, 1-0 on Friday night.
Axenfeld scored on a free kick, beating Centennial goalie Kate Donegan. Donegan recorded 12 saves in the game despite her team being outshot.
“Reservoir outshot us 22-13, but many of these shots were from well outside the 18, which is a good indicator of how well we defended,” said Centennial coach Steve Baxter. “Overall, the game was evenly played, with both teams able to show periods of good possession throughout.”
The Gators improved 6-1-1 overall and 4-0-1 in Howard County action, while the Eagles dropped to 5-3 and 3-2 respectively.
“I am very proud of my players,” said Baxter. “They worked hard the entire game. To shut out Reservoir for 96 minutes is a great accomplishment. It is such a shame to lose a game this way, but we will keep our heads up and move on.”
