In a fast, physical, back and forth match, third-seeded and No. 6 ranked John Carroll won its IAAM quarterfinal match, 2-0, over visiting Maryvale on Monday.

The Patriots (13-2-3) had to fend off an opening kickoff attack from the Lions that did not result in a shot but did put John Carroll on its heels for the first few minutes.

The first half was evenly matched and ended in a 0-0 tie.

Maryvale (6-9-2) was on the attack early in the second half but failed to turn the pressure into points.  Junior keeper and co-captain Gina Maiorana deflected a shot from inside the 18 to keep the game scoreless.

After clearing the ball and withstanding a second Lions attack senior sweeper and co-captain Morgan Fraczkowski collected a ball and carried it from deep in the back third up the field before pushing it forward on a quick counter attack.

The Patriots strung together a series of passes before junior Shelby Foit passed the ball to a charging Devin Hogan, who put it past the Maryvale keeper to put John Carroll ahead 1-0 at the 87-minute mark.

Later, Fraczkowski was able to add an insurance goal after putting away a score off of senior Kadie Hook’s corner that Hogan kicked loose.

John Carroll will travel to play No. 3 Archbishop Spalding, third seed in tournament, one of the IAAM semifinal contests.
