Sophomores Olivia DiFonso and Nicole Wojcik pushed No. 5 John Carroll out to an early lead that they never relinquished as the Patriots beat Maryvale, 4-0 on Wednesday.
DiFonso assisted both of Wojcik’s girls in the first ten minutes of the game. The first of the goals stemmed from a deflection off of a shot on Maryvale keeper Phillips, which DiFonso touched to Wojcik for a one-touch finish in front of the net.
The second goal, DiFonso worked the ball down to the end line and played a beautiful drawn back ball to the six for Wojcik, who again, maintained her composure, and one-touched the ball into the net for her fifth goal of the season. While John Carroll had the best on the scoreboard, Maryvale controlled much of the play of the match.
The second half was back-and-forth until about 12 minutes remained in the match when senior Kadie Hook played a long ball across that pulled the Maryvale keeper out for a deflection, leaving sophomore Jordan Clarke with a great finish to the left side of the netting.
The last goal was scored in the final minute of play when senior Morgan Fraczkowski played a long through ball to Difonso who took on her defender one-on-one and scored. DiFonso now leads the team in scoring with 4 goals and 7 assists for the season.
The Patriot defense and midfield had their hands full but got the job done and shut out the Lions with junior keeper Gina Mariorana making 5 saves.
John Carroll improved to 8-0-1 overall and 3-0-1 in the IAAM A Confernce. Maryvale dropped to 5-3-1 and 3-1-0 respectively.
