Patriots will face Calvert Hall after a playoff win over Concordia Prep

The John Carroll boys soccer team picked up one of the biggest wins in its program’s history, Tuesday evening in Bel Air, as the 5th-ranked Patriots defeated No. 13 Concordia Prep to advance to the MIAA A Conference semifinals.

The Patriots (14-6-2) started quickly when Christian Rugel, with an assist from a Ryan Skandalis assist, put JC on the board just seven minutes into the contest.

Concordia had the better of the play for the remainder of the first half and into the second, but their sustained pressure was unable to produce the equalizer. John Carroll, however, took control of the match when they scored their second goal. It came on a well delivered set piece by Skandalis which was finished by Cam Tolson. The Patriots then finished off the contest with their third goal, as Colin DiIorio combined with Josh Petty after a great team build up. John Carroll keepers Amir Smith and Tyler Mezzedra finished with two saves each.

John Carroll will now travel to Calvert Hall on Thursday evening (6:00 p.m.) to face the second-ranked Cardinals in a one semifinal game. Curley visits McDonogh in the other. Thursday’s winners will advance to the MIAA A Conference Championship Game on Sunday evening (5:30 p.m.) at Anne Arundel Community College.

Concordia Prep completes its season at 11-9-2, making the league playoffs in just their first year in the conference.
