Indians sport St. Anthony’s an early score then charge to victory
The Franklin defense surrendered an early touchdown on the road in New York, Saturday, before the Indians stormed back to win 33-15 in their 2019 football season-opener.
After Marlo Escobar’s 33-yard touchdown run put the home team out in front, Von Reames responded with two long touchdown runs to put the Indians in front to stay. Late in the first quarter, Reames raced 80 yards to tie the game and, early in the second, he broke loose for an 88-yard TD flash. Reames finished with 186 yards rushing on just six carries.
Franklin quarterback Vernon Brown scored on a 1-yard run, later in the second quarter, to give Franklin a 20-7 lead at the half.
Brown opened the second half with a 52-yard touchdown throw to Anthony Morante, before St. Anthony’s finally got its second and final score on a 3-yard run by Escobar.
Franklin capped the third quarter with the game’s final score, a 60-yard TD strike from Brown to Mekai Felton. Brown finished with 177 yards passing, three touchdowns and two interceptions.
Franklin’s offense produced 518 total yards include 304 rushing, but did commit four turnovers. The defense responded with 10 sacks, three interceptions and fumble recoveries.
DJ Frasier made 11 tackles with a sack, a hurry and a fumble recovery. Damon David, Montre Harris and Austin Amadi each recorded nine tackles and combined for six sacks (3 by Harris), five hurries, one forced fumble, one fumble recovery and one interception.
