After suffering a loss to No. 11 Bel Air earlier in the day and missing three starters, things weren’t looking so hot for the No. 20 Harford Tech Cobras as they hosted the Chesapeake-AA Cougars.
Dropping to a 24-6 deficit in six matches, the Cobras saw the Cougars take advantage of back-to-back falls by Alex Rice and Stephen Spinnenweber at 140 and 145, combined with added falls by Cody Morrow (119) and Kyle Gittings (125) to open the meet.
But Harford Tech was far from being knocked out, and a series of falls and six-consecutive wins would pull the Cobras back to their feet and launch them ahead of the Cougars to the 41-30 final.
In the momentum swing, Colin Riley, George Majchrzak and Dillon Brush linked together three consecutive falls at 152, 160 and 171, respectively, and watched Cook (189) and Will Hughes (285) added decision-wins to Mike Vega’s tech fall at 215 for a turnaround lead at 35-24 with two bouts to go.
Still in the doghouse and needing to fight-off straight falls, the Cobras came eerily close to a loss when dropping a 103-pound pin to Cougar Jeremy Morrow, pulling Chesapeake to within one fall of a tie, but Tech’s Tyler Granese closed the meet with a pin of his own a 112, sealing the 11-point victory.
While falls kept the No. 20 Harford Tech Cobras in the dual meet against No. 11 Bel Air, it was the combination of eight individual wins and a couple bonus points which led the Bobcats to a much needed UCBAC win, 35-30.
The Bobcats, coming off recent losses to Perry Hall and No. 3 John Carroll, only notched two falls to the Cobras’ four, but saw two added tech falls from Tony Proctor (130) and Steve Cross (140) combine with a major decision by William Holder-more at 160 to hold a 29-12 lead over host Harford Tech nine matches into the meet.
Pinners for Bel Air were Jeff Taylor, earning the first Bel Air win of the night in the meet’s second bout, and Tom Kuegler, closing the night with Bel Air’s final win at 189 to post the nearly uncatchable 35-point finish.
Down 35-18, the Cobras would have needed three straight falls to earn another 18 team-points and top the Bobcats by one, but instead saw just one fall from Nathan Haskell (103) combine with decisioners Mike Vega (215) and Will Hughes (285), falling just short.
Haskell was joined by three other teammates in pinning performances, including Tyler Granese, opening the meet with a fall at 112, James Cosgrove (135) and Dillon Brush (171), and the Cobras surely missed out on added bonus points due to injured starters.
Mike Bush, John Cross and Queen added wins to the Bobcat scorebook with decisions at 125, 145 and 152, respectively, culminating in Bel Air’s eight bouts won.
Bel Air will soon face Gwynn Park, Feb. 5, as Harford Tech will play host to Atholton, Feb. 4.
