Fast start propels Quakers past St. Mary’s

Every team wants a fast start to their season and 18th-ranked Friends School got just that, Thursday, when the Quakers scored two times in the first 15 minutes of their season-opener and made them stand up for a 2-1 win over St. Mary’s, in MIAA B Conference soccer action.

Friends, the reigning league champions, opened the scoring with a free-kick which Alex Shine dispatched front post with pace and accuracy. Five minutes later Sean Sewell scored on a wonderful 25-yard strike into the top right corner of the St Mary’s net.

On a hot evening, the teams paused for a pair of water breaks to replenish many tired legs in an aggressive matchup.

The second half kicked off with minimal chances for either team, but a St. Mary’s red card put the home side down to 10 players with 20 minutes to go. Friends, however, could not take advantage, missing a few easy chances before the Saints got on the scoreboard with a late penalty kick to make it a nervy last five minutes for the Quakers.
