No. 17 Glenelg started quickly and held on for a 2-0 victory over visiting Centennial on Friday evening.
Junior midfielder Christina Kaminsky scored in the 4th minute and Rachel McCarriher added another in the 8th minute, both started off of corner kicks. Amanda Lyons had an assist for the Gladiators.
Kaminsky’s goal was shot back in after being cleared wide and initially saved by Eagles goalie Eiica Albornoz (11 saves), but Glenelg was able to knock in the rebound.
The second score was directly off a corner kick. The ball was just out the keeper’s reach as she came out to make a play on the ball and McCarriher knocked it into the open net.
Jordan Coburn made three defensive saves to keep Centennial in the game but the offense couldn’t get started.
The Gladiators improved to 8-2-2 overall and 6-1-2 in Howard County. The Eagles dropped to 7-5-1, 5-4-1.
“My team played hard, but it is never easy to erase early deficits,” said Centennial coach Steve Baxter. “Going into the playoffs, we will have to get off to better starts and that will be our focus.”
