Davis produces six TD’s in 46-20 victory

No. 11 Mervo continued its strong 2017 season start, Friday afternoon, as it routed Baltimore City Division I rival Poly, 46-20, in the league opener for both schools.

Mervo senior quarterback Carlos Davis was the driving force in the victory as he three four touchdown passes and rushed for two additional scores in the victory.

Despite jumping out to a quick 14-0 lead, Mervo did not put away the scrappy Engineers until late in the second half when the scored the games final 20 points.

Davis put the Mustangs (3-0) on the board with a 17-yard touchdown pass to Corey Peterkin in the opening quarter. It was the first of three TD connections between the pair on the afternoon. The second came in the second quarter as Mervo established its 14-0 advantage.

Poly got on the board later in the second quarter when quarterback Devone Stubbs connected with Tyrese Chambers for a 44-yard touchdown reception and the Engineers went to the half trailing 14-8.

The teams traded touchdowns on the first five possessions of the second half, with Mervo getting a 9-yard TD pass from Davis to Terry Jones and a 35-yard run by Davis. Poly countered with a 48-yard breakaway touchdown run by K’ron Hines and a 67-yard strike from Stubbs to Tyrese Chambers, before a 31-yard TD run by Mervo’s Rykim Lemon concluded the back-and-forth TD volleys.

In the fourth quarter, the Mervo defense finally shutdown Poly (0-2), which the offense put the game out of reach with 16-yard TD pass from Davis to Peterkin and a 9-yard run by Davis.
