After opening its football season with a pair of losses to MIAA A Conference powers, including a painful overtime setback to No. 3 Calvert Hall last week, 10th ranked Archbishop Spalding put a mark in the win column Friday night, as the Cavaliers opened their MIAA B Conference schedule with a 47-30 victory over visiting John Carroll.

Senior K. K. Smith led the way as he racked up 237 yards rushing and scored four touchdowns.

Spalding dominated the first half, building a 33-9, before coach Mike Whittles offered ample playing time to his reserves.

Brian Hunt rushed eight times for 80 yards and scored a touchdown to lead John Carroll, while Patriot quarterback Ryan Kirby rushed for 56 yards and passed for 66 more and a touchdown.

Both teams return to action next Friday.  John Carroll travels to Frederick to face St. John’s Catholic Prep, while Spalding will remain at home and face No. 9 Loyola, another A Conference heavyweight.
