While its MIAA A Conference rivals were in the heat of league play Friday, Calvert Hall College had a respite of sorts, hosting a tough LaSalle College squad from the Philadelphia area. The No. 3 Cardinals imposed their will in the opening half and posted an 8-5 decision on LaSalle Road.
Kelton Black and Carter Brown each scored two goals and handed out an assist for Calvert Hall (6-0 overall), and Stephen Kelly, Patrick Kelly, Garrett Novotny and Brian Bolewicki each had a score. Sean Coleman scored twice for LaSalle (0-3).
The Cardinals jumped out to a 5-0 first half lead against the reigning Philadelphia Catholic League as they followed up strong after Tuesday’s victory over No. 1 St. Paul’s School. With No. 2 Boys’ Latin losing at St. Mary’s Friday evening, Calvert Hall is in position to ascend to the No. 1 ranking in the next VSN’s Top 20.
Bolewicki opened the scoring with an assist by Carter Brown in the opening quarter. Black made it 2-0 on an assist from Stephen Kelly.
With an extra man advantage, Patrick Kelly made an excellent face dodge and scored, making it 3-0. Stephen Kelly won the ensuing faceoff, raced downfield, dodged a pair of LaSalle defenders and scored. Black scored his second goal of the game with two seconds left in the first half, sending the Cardinals to the locker room with a 5-0 advantage.
LaSalle scored early in the third quarter to close the lead to 5-1, but Calvert Hall quickly answered on an extra man goal by Carter Brown that was assisted by Patrick Kelly. Carter Brown netted his second goal of the game on a nifty assist by Black.
Novotny rounded out the Cardinals’ scoring on a nice feed from Bolewicki. The Cardinals head to Irvington Tuesday for a league match against Mount St. Joseph.
