A big Saturday of high school volleyball action is on tap as a host of local teams will take part in several tournaments around the state.

Across the Bay Bridge at North Caroline, three Top 10 squads, Mount de Sales Academy, Towson and Broadneck will compete at the Bulldog Invitational, considered the top volleyball tournament in the state. The No. 3 Sailors and fourth-ranked Generals will meet in the opening round of pool play.

Towson and Mount de Sales are in pool A with Chesapeake-Anne Arundel and Patuxent from the Southern Maryland Athletic Conference. South River and Rising Sun are in pool B with another SMAC school, Huntingtown, and Salisbury Christian School.

Two-time defending Class 4A state champ Broadneck caps its opening week of play with Calvert, Elizabeth Seton from Prince George’s County and host North Caroline in pool C. The top two teams from each pool advances into single elimination play,

No. 11 Archbishop Spalding, 18th ranked and host McDonogh School, and No. 20 Notre Dame Prep are part of the 10-team field at the Eagle Invitational. The Eagles, Institute of Notre Dame, Western Tech, Perry Hall and Paul VI (VA) will compete in the pool play on the Memorial Field House court.

NDP, Spalding, Franklin, Woodlawn and reigning Baltimore City champ Poly makes up the other pool that’ll play in the Rollins-Luetkemeyer Athletic Center. The top two teams from each pool advances to the semifinal round.

Tinuke IbitolaSeven local squads including No. 6 Arundel, No. 9 Mount Hebron and 14th ranked Liberty will be in Frederick for the 8th annual Thomas Johnson Invitational. Mount Hebron will compete against Howard County foe Howard, host Thomas Johnson and Smithsburg from Washington County in pool A.

Pool B will have Carroll County rivals Winters Mill, Westminster and South Carroll along with Poolesville from Montgomery County, and Washington County’s Clear Spring. Arundel and Liberty will be in pool C with Frederick County’s Middletown and Boonsboro from Washington County.

The top two teams from each pool advances to the single elimination round.
