In a surprising development, the Maryland Public Secondary Schools Athletic Association announced, on Friday, a return date for high school sports in the state public schools system.
As outlined in the plan, winter sports will begin on Feb. 1 and run through March 27. The fall season will begin March 15 and conclude on May 8, while the spring season will get underway on April 26 and wrap up on June 19.
The plan is part of the MPSSAA’s “Roadmap for Return to Interscholastic Athletics and Extracurricular Activities,” which was developed in consultation with the state’s 24 local school systems and the Maryland State Board of Education, has been approved by the State of Maryland.
The plan calls for 20 days of preseason preparation prior to the start of each five week season. No details have yet been announced about potential state tournaments. Specifically the announcement stated, “The MPSSAA recognizes the highest risk, according to the Center for Disease Control and Prevention, is increased participation opportunities that includes statewide competitions among different geographic areas. The MPSSAA will look for creative ways regarding these types of events and make decisions as we get closer to the second semester.”
