No. 7 Sailors celebrate Homecoming, hand Bobcats first loss in 5-set thriller; Kelenna Onukwugha has 15 kills

Mount de Sales volleyball coach Gary Troy talks to his team after the opening set of Saturday’s non-league match with Bel Air. The No. 7 Sailors defeated the previously undefeated Bobcats in five sets in Baltimore County.

Freshman hitter Kelenna Onukwugha had 15 kills and Mary Grace Govena added 13 kills as seventh-ranked Mount de Sales Academy defeated No. 8 Bel Air, 14-25, 25-17, 25-23, 23-25 and 15-9, in a non-league contest in Catonsville Saturday afternoon.

Junior Chidinma Onukwugha finished with 11 kills for the defending IAAM A champion Sailors, who won their eighth straight decision in front of a huge Homecoming audience. Junior Maddie Reagan led Bel Air with 12 kills and added an ace, and McKenna Reiswig finished with 8 kills.

Bel Air (8-1), which leads the UCBAC Chesapeake, fell 4-0 early in the opening set before storming to victory. The Bobcats, down 2-1, forced the decisive fifth set, but weren’t able to overcome serving and passing errors.

Olivia Simon had 21 assists and four aces for Bel Air, and Lexi Couch (five kills), Makenzie Regan and freshman Megan Cassaday also had four aces.

The Harford County squad return to UCBAC Chesapeake play this week with Havre de Grace (Tuesday) and Bohemia Manor (Thursday). Mount de Sales hosts Archbishop Spalding Tuesday afternoon, then starts a four-game road swing Thursday at John Carroll School.
