Mount de Sales and Surrattsville kicked off the 2010 BBOWS Tournament, an event which features 10 girls basketball teams in three days of action at three different gyms, on Tuesday, with an exciting contest, won 68-64 by the Sailors.

Mount de Sales put four players in double figures and steadily built a 46-37 lead after three quarters, but had to withstand a late charge by Surrattsville in the final quarter.

Senior Melissa Singer, who scored a game-high 16 points, and freshman Amanda Miller, who scored 10 points, combined to sink 7-of-8 free throws in the final period to close out the win.  The Sailors were 14-of-19 from the line in the final period.

Also in double digits for the Sailoers were sophomore Gabby Cha and freshman Lilly Robb, who combined for 23 points.

Mount de Sales will meet Dulaney on Tuesday at 4:00 p.m., also at McDonogh, before closing their participation in the event by hosting South Carroll, on Wednesday, at Mount de Sales (8:00 p.m.).

The Holly & Hoops featured five games at McDonogh on Monday and will follow with five more tomorrow, again at McDonogh.  On Wednesday, two games will be played at St. Timothy’s and two at Mount de Sales.
