Senior center Hannah Schmidt scored a game-high 11 points and added eight rebounds to pace Mount de Sales over the Maryland Academy of Technology, Health and Science (MATHS), 40-38.
With nine seconds left in the game with her team nursing a two-point lead, Schmidt was fouled. She calmly sank both free-throws to put the Sailors ahead 40-36.
Mount de Sales (12-3) coach Trish Armstrong told her players to fall back on defense and not to foul. MATHS came down and scored on a layup as time expired.
Lilly Robb and Melissa Singer combined for 16 points for the Sailors. Treasure Jefferson and Asha Bryant each scored nine points to pace MATHS, who had success against the IAAM earlier in the season with a 63-30 rout over Maryvale.
In the second quarter, Mount de Sales began to break the Panthers’ press and defensively held MATHS scoreless in the period to take an 18-5 lead into halftime.
