No. 3 Cougars rebound with 75-73 victory to keep pace in MIAA A basketball; Perry scores 27

Deon Perry led Mount Carmel back into the win column Wednesday. The Loyola University-bound senior guard finished with 27 points as the third-ranked Cougars defeated No. 10 Gilman School in a MIAA A Conference Red Division contest on Old Eastern Avenue.

After a disappointing effort Monday, Our Lady of Mount Carmel boys basketball looked to gain momentum for the stretch run against Gilman School Wednesday evening at home.

The No. 3 Cougars got back in the win column with a hard fought 75-73 victory over the 10th-ranked Greyhounds in a MIAA A Conference match in Essex. Senior guard Deon Perry scored 27 points for Mount Carmel, and Mitchell Kalu added 11.

Perry, who will play for Loyola University, scored 21 points in the second half as the Old Eastern Avenue school overcame a 28-27 halftime deficit. The win puts Mount Carmel (18-4 overall) in a virtual three-way tie for first in the MIAA A Red Division (8-2) with No. 2 Archbishop Spalding (7-1) and fourth-ranked Mount St. Joseph (7-1).

The Cavaliers and Gaels currently hold the head-t0-head tiebreaker over the Cougars. Monday, Mount St. Joseph dominated Mount Carmel over the final 16 minutes in an 84-68 triumph inside The Smith Center in Irvington.

Perry, who had 26 points Monday, came to life in the third quarter Wednesday, knocking down three 3-pointers in the frame as Mount Carmel grabbed a 51-46 advantage entering the fourth. He scored 12 in the fourth quarter, including a clutch 8-of-8 from the free throw line.

Allen Mordi also posted 11 points for Mount Carmel. Senior guard and St. Joseph’s recruit Christian Winborne finished with 21 points for Gilman (6-5, 4-4 MIAA A Red), and Yasir Supreme added 20.

The Greyhounds will get another shot at Mount Carmel Monday evening in Roland Park after welcoming Spalding to Finney Center Friday. The Cougars are at top-ranked St. Frances Academy Friday evening for a MIAA A/Baltimore Catholic League tilt.
