On a night when they honored big John Crowder, the Mount Carmel basketball team turned in a big season-opening performance with a 94-44 non-conference win over Cristo Rey.

Crowder, who would have begun his senior season on Tuesday, was tragically shot and killed over the summer, an incident that sent shock and sadness throughout the Baltimore basketball community.  In his honor, a large No. 15 decal, the jersey number he wore with the Cougars, has been placed on the court next to the Mount Carmel bench for this season.

Sophomore guard Corey Groom led the way for the Cougars with 20 points.  Junior’s Thomas Thorton and Gedas Juozapavicius also had big nights, scoring 19 and 17 points, respectively.

The Cougars will play next on Monday, November 29 as they square off with MIAA A conference opponent Mount St. Joseph.
