It would be wise for the 28 MIAA finalists to go back and study their match tape against their 2011 rivals, because there is a possibility for each of the 14 bouts to be seen again in this weekend’s 2011 Maryland Independent School State Tournament.

In the seeding for the two day tournament at the McDonogh School, the MIAA was set atop all but three of the 14 weightclasses, and took the top two seeds in seven of the brackets.

Crowning four champions in the MIAAs, St. Paul’s enters the states with the largest amount of number one seeds, seeing champs Jack Mutchnik (103), Eric Friedman (119), Peter Galli (140) and Brad Mutchnik (152) all earn top slots in their respective weightclasses, followed by MIAA Champs Archbishop Spalding, with three number ones.

As long as they can duplicate last weekend’s performance, Jake, Friedman and Galli should be able to take state titles, as they are projected see their MIAA finals foes in the final round this Saturday, but Brad Mutchnik could face Archbishop Curley’s Chuckie Blankenship in the tournament semis if each wrestler advances out of Friday’s quarterfinals.

Other projected rematches include Mount St. Joe’s Tyler Rill and Curley’s Brett Brigman at 160, and Spalding’s KK Smith and McDonogh’s Kevin marvel at 189, and the exciting third meetings of McDonogh’s Jack Clark and John Carrolls George Weber at 130, and Spalding’s Charlie Lynch with Mt. St. Joe’s Brady Massaro at 145.

BrettBut the added pressure from outside-conference teams will force a need for upsets to see last weekend’s match-ups with Pallotti’s John Chenault and Spalding’s Logan Breitenbach, each needing to pull upsets to meet in the 125-pound final, and the same going with Curley’s Outstand Wrestler Brett Przywara and Spalding’s Brady Gaynor at 135.

Crusader Matt Green and Gael wrestler Tyler Tippet will also need double upsets to meet in the state finals at 215.

DJ Smith of Spalding will try to take an upset path over the 171-pound second seed to see Patriots’ Mathew Miller in the 171-pound final.

Two weightclasses will se the need for Pallotti’s Chris Halkos and Derek Pittman to avenge MIAA Finals losses as early as the MIS semis, each facing Spalding’s Cole Gallagher and McDonogh’s Roman Braglio in their 112 and 285-pound respective semifinals.

It is sure to be an exciting weekend at the McDonogh School, as Spalding tries to win its eighth tournament of the season and St. Paul’s, with its four number one seeds, looks to be the big “B” Conference team to tackle the MIS State Title.

As with their past tournament runs, Spalding is expected to put upwards of nine wrestlers into the semifinals, as opposed to the six possible for the Crusaders, but only time will tell who will emerge from this weekend’s tournament as the best in the state.
