South River High girls’ basketball team went into Monday’s evening matchup with Meade looking to serve notice in the Anne Arundel County league race.

Mission accomplished. The Seahawks handled the Mustangs, 60-41, in Edgewater.

Aleeyah Hopkins scored 16 points for South River (4-0 overall, 3-0 Anne Arundel) and Bre Bolden added 13. Imani Bailey led all scorers with 17 points for Meade (1-3, 1-2 Anne Arundel), and Jamie McKeither finished with 15.

Tied at 13 after the opening quarter, South River outscored the Mustangs, 23-7, in the second period for a 16-point halftime cushion. The Seahawks pulled away in the fourth after Meade pulled to within single-digits.

Bolden and Hopkins combined for 14 points in a 17-4 closing run in the second, staking South River to the huge lead. Meade closed to 37-32 late in the third quarter, but the Seahawks scored 20 of the next 26 points gained command for good.

Dominique Hagins contributed 10 points for South River, which travels to Upper Marlboro for a non-league match with nationally ranked Riverdale Baptist Tuesday. Meade plays at Glen Burnie Friday afternoon.
