Two undefeated teams entered the finals of the McDonogh Holiday Duals, Thursday, both walloping their opponents with large wins and remaining flawless through the tournament.

Spring Grove, going 7-0 through Pool A, and McDonogh, going 6-0 in Pool B, both took to the tournament final with something to prove, and it was the Eagles who would prove the most, downing Spring Brook with a 32-23 win.

Winning every dual meet by more than 40 points, the Eagles soared to the highest level of Pool B in both days of wrestling, while Spring Grove ripped away from Archbishop Curley in Pool A, who was tied for first before suffering a loss to Glenelg in the fifth round and to Old Mill in the seventh.

Curley came back to beat South River in the battle of the of two Maryland teams for a fifth place finish, 47-16, and ending the tournament 5-3.

The Gladiators entered day two just one-win back from the leaders in Pool A, dropping a match to Brentsville on Glenelgtiebreaking criteria, 31-30, and wrestled tough on Thursday for three more wins and a chance against 5-1 Loyola.

Glenelg downed in-state competition Curley and Old Mill in back-to-back tight matches, beating Curley, 36-33, with a fall in the final bout, and handling Old Mill, 48-22, before easing past the Dons in the bronze-medal match, 39-31.

Loyola started Thursday 2-1and tied for second in Pool B, and wins over Washington, Northeastern and South River helped the Dons reach their final match of the two-day tournament in a battle with Glenelg.  Loyola’s only loss in the tournament before the finals was to host McDonogh in the very first round, 56-15, and then eventually losing to Glenelg in the medal match.

Old Mill had its ups and downs over the two day tournament, taking pride in a 37-36 win over Curley and very tight losses to some top competition.
