Maryvale Prep relied on a strong effort from senior guard Carolyn Hildreth and sophomore forward Lauren Eckholm to survive a second half surge by Bryn Mawr School for a 54-52 decision in an IAAM B Conference contest Monday evening.
Bryn Mawr (5-11 overall, 1-5 IAAM B Red) was leading 52-51 with 22 seconds remaining in regulation when Hildreth deflected a dribble to teammate Eckholm in the lane. Eckholm took one dribble and threw a perfect baseball pass to the streaking Hildreth for the breakaway layup and the lead, 53-52.
Sophomore Sam Stewart stole an inbounds pass with eight seconds left and hit a free throw for the final margin. The Lions (6-7, 4-3 IAAM B Gold) were able to overcome injuries and foul trouble Monday evening.
The Brooklandville school, minus an ill senior guard Ashley Helmrath, lost junior point guard Meghan Hildreth to an ankle sprain just before halftime. Early in the third period, senior guard Besi Sheshi fouled out.
The Mawrtians took advantage, wiping out a nine-point halftime deficit. Carolyn Hildreth moved to the point guard position in the second half and found guard Madison Oliver for a lay-in and Taylor Oliver for a critical three-pointer in the final quarter.
Eckholm finished with 12 points and 11 rebounds. Carolyn Hildreth finished with 11 points, six assists and four steals.
Bryn Mawr junior Cassandra Brumback led all scorers with 17 points.
