IAAM B Lions land 14th after upsetting A Conference favorites

by Pat O’Malley

With a pair of victories over two Top 20 teams projected to be the top teams in the IAAM A Conference, Maryvale Prep of the IAAM B Conference has crashed into the VSN Volleyball poll for the first time this season. The Lions have debuted at No. 14.

Maryvale (7-1) upset A Conference powers, No. 6 Mount de Sales, the defending champions, 3-2, and then No. 13 St. Paul’s School for Girls (now No. 15), 3-1. The two A Conference powers were handed their first losses of the 2018 season by Maryvale Prep. The latter has lost only to 4-3 Norte Dame Prep, also of the A Conference by 3-2.

The now No. 18 Severna Park Falcons have got to be the best 2-3 team ever and keep your eyes on them. The Falcons won their first two matches of the season last week over then No. 8 Centennial and Notre Dame Prep by 3-1 scores after suffering three losses to not Top 20 or Top 10 teams, BUT Top 5 teams in No. 1 Atholton, No. 3 Arundel and No. 5 Dulaney.

No. 10 Broadneck is in a similar position at 1-2 losing to top ranked Atholton and No. 2 South River. Rarely do teams with losing records appear in our Top 20, but the Bruins will be there at the end as a contender in the Class 4A East Region and will finish with a winning record. They won’t be taken lightly for sure by the likes of Nos. 2 and 3 South River and Arundel in post season play.

The first seven teams in the Top 20 held onto their berths while Howard moved up from 10 to 8 and Rising Sun of Cecil County and the UCBAC cracked the first 10 at No. 9, from No. 11. The perennial Class 2A State Final Four Tigers overcame a 2-0 deficit against last year’s 1A State finalist and No. 19 ranked Perryville to emerge with a 3-2 victory over the Panthers last week.

Liberty of Carroll County and the MVAL Chesapeake Division dropped to 1-2 and fell from No. 16 and out of the poll, but the Lions could very well return. No. 4 Westminster, No. 13 Winters Mill and No. 20 Century give Carroll County the most representation in the rankings in years.
