The Maryland Orioles (22U) baseball team scored the winning run in the bottom of the eighth inning to give the O’s a 3-2 win over Putty Hill Gold at North County High School on Tuesday night, to open the 2011 Maryland Collegiate Baseball League season.
Brandon Franke lead off the eighth for the O’s with a single, he advanced to second when Christian Wolfe walked, moved to third on a wild pitch, and eventually scored the winning run with two down when Tyler Drinkyard singled up the middle.
The Gold used five pitchers in the sweltering heat, and they had the led twice,1-0 in the fifth, and 2-1 in the sixth, but the O’s tied the game in the bottom of the seventh on a RBI single off the bat of Ronnie Zeberlein, and then won it in the eighth.
Gold starter Nick Meyer held the O’s hitless for the first four innings, and he gave way to Sam Summers in the fifth. Mike Patrick pitched a scoreless sixth, and Mike Bronkoski worked the seventh.
Nick Karsos, who took over in the eighth, suffered the loss. Karsos almost pitched out of trouble, fanning two O’s with two on, before Drinkyard plated the winning run.
Cory Taylor went the first four for the Orioles, and Dom Vattuone went the rest of the way to notch the win for coach Steve Wolfe.
The Gold got a run in the fifth on a wild pitch, and a Justin Anderson put the Gold ahead 2-1 with a double in the sixth.
Rich Duffee had an RBi single for the O’s in the fifth. Drinkyard and Kodi Beckwith each had two hits for the O’s.
