The Marriotts Ridge girls soccer team flexed its muscles on Saturday, playing in its own tournament that was comprised of two other teams ranked in the Varsity Sports Network Top 20 poll in No. 9 Fallston and No. 11 Hereford.

The No. 14 Mustangs (6-0-1) topped Walkersville 4-0 in the first game.  

Senior Katherine Kanner scored two goals while Kara Schaffer and Maxine Brewer each scored in the win. Goalie Kristine Mumby had seven saves in the shutout.

Fallston (Harford County) beat Hereford (Baltimore County), 3-1 in the other semifinal.  Scoring machine Marissa Walker netted two goals and Maggie Clough added the other.  

Clough, Sydney Blomquist and Lara Myers each had an assist for the No. 9 Cougars (6-1-0).

Kelsey Mattola scored the lone goal for the No. 11 Bulls (4-2-0).  Goalkeeper for Fallston, Alyssa Dugent, had seven saves while Hereford goalie Michelle Oosterwijk had 11 saves.  The score was tied 1-1 at the half.

In the championship game, Marriotts Ridge jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the first half.  Brewer scored twice for the Mustangs while Schaffer and Amanda Grote both found the back of the net.

In goal for Fallston, Jenna Weyant recorded a save and Alyssa Dugent had two.  Mumby recorded one save for Marriotts Ridge.

“Any time you go up against a strong team such as Fallston and come up with a win, it inevitably boosts your team’s confidence,” said Marriotts Ridge coach Robin Grey.  “Going into this tournament, we knew whomever we faced, be it Hereford or Fallston, it was going to be a battle.  Both are quality programs – one the 2A defending state champ, the other a 3A state semi-finalist.  I told the girls this tournament would not only give us an idea of how we might fair come playoffs, but provide an opportunity to make a statement and earn some respect.”

She added: “Come playoffs, if we can make it out of our region, I predict we will see Fallston again.  I don’t want take anything away from our win yesterday, it was a great win but the girls and I know we’ll have to prove ourselves all over again in November.”

In the consolation game, Hereford routed Walkersville, 5-0 to take third place. Sophomore Abby Noble scored three times in the game.
