Century continues dominance in Carroll boys hoops

It was unusual, but the Carroll County high school boys’ basketball season had a familiar ending.

Century is the champion again, clinching first in the Carroll County Athletic League (CCAL) with a 58-29 victory over South Carroll Wednesday evening.

Senior guard Noah Riley finished with 14 points for the Knights (9-1 overall and Carroll), and George Barbados added 13.

The Sykesville school led by as many as 23 points in the opening half, paving the way for a third consecutive CCAL crown. Century have won five league titles in the last eight seasons.

Century’s only loss came against rival Liberty (61-60 on Jan. 29). The Knights completed their season at Francis Scott Key Friday evening.

Carroll County is the only area public system playing basketball in the winter. Anne Arundel, Baltimore, Harford and Howard counties and Baltimore City have forgo winter athletics because of COVID-19 concerns.

Those areas, minus Baltimore City, will have a truncated fall season, starting next month.

The IAAM recently started an “open season” basketball format, and the MIAA will conduct a regular season-only campaign starting Feb. 17.
