Dons debut at No. 16; Mervo jumps into Top 20

For the first time since 2011, Loyola Blakefield is among the state’s best football teams. The Dons are 16th in the first state media Top 25 poll of the 2019 regular season.

The Dons (2-0 overall), who knocked off then-No. 8 Georgetown Prep last week, are one of 11 Baltimore region squads in the state poll. It’s Loyola’s first state ranking since week 6 of the 2011 campaign.

St. Frances Academy is again the unanimous No. 1 with Calvert Hall College (4th) and Archbishop Spalding (No. 5) in the Top 5. Mount St. Joseph, which was 3rd in the preseason poll, is No. 6 after falling to Good Counsel (No. 3) over the weekend.

Franklin (No. 8) is the area’s highest ranked public team. Also of local interest in the poll are No. 15 McDonogh School, No. 18 Milford Mill Academy, No. 20 Mervo, No. 24 Elkton and No. 25 Dunbar.

Broadneck and Dundalk received votes but did not crack the Top 25. The Bruins were 22nd in the preseason poll, but fell to Prince George’s County’s Potomac in their season opener last Friday.
