Baltimore Orioles manager Brandon Hyde announced on Sunday that former Loyola Blakefield pitcher Bruce Zimmerman has made the ball club’s opening day roster and will be inserted into the team’s starting rotation. Zimmerman, a left-hander, is slated to pitch the third game of the season on April 4th at Fenway Park against the Boston Red Sox.
Zimmerman, considered a long shot to start the season in the Major Leagues when Spring Training began, forced himself into contention by tossing nine scoreless innings in Grapefruit League games and also impressing in “B” games and back-field appearances.
The Orioles acquired Zimmerman in 2018 from the Atlanta Braves in a trade involving former No. 1 draft pick Kevin Gausman and veteran reliever Darren O’Day, who drafted him out of the University of Mount Olive in the 2017 MLB Draft. Zimmerman, who began his college career at Towson University, had a break-out season at Double A Bowie in 2019 and made his Major League debut with the Orioles, last September at Oriole Park at Camden Yards.
