Muthii scores “Golden Goal” to advance Raiders to boys soccer region final

The Sparrows Point boys soccer team snuck up on many last fall when it caught fire late in the season and rode that momentum all the way to the 1A state championship.

Today, the Pointers may be feeling a little surprised themselves as their bid to repeat as state champs came to an end, Friday, as Loch Raven went on the road and knocked off the Pointers, 2-1, in overtime, in the Class 1A North Region Section I final.

Loch Raven may have had the potential for this game circled after a heartbreaking 2-1 loss to Sparrows Point in the regular season. In that match, the Raiders surrendered an own goal with just 90 seconds to play in regulation.

“It was a physical game,” said Loch Raven coach Matt Radebaugh. “It was well played by both sides.”

The contest was scoreless at the half, but Sparrows Point broke on top with 25 minutes remaining in regulation. Ben Hester had a clean header off a great cross from Zach Lambert.

As the clock ticked down to the final 13 minutes, Reice Thuerrauch got the equalizer for the Raiders, heading home a long throw-in from Antonio Coppola.

The Golden Goal came in first minute of overtime, when Josh Muthii cleaned up a bouncing ball in front of the goal off another long throw-in from Coppola.

The Raiders will now play at Ben Franklin of Baltimore City on Tuesday at 6 p.m. for the 1A North Championship and a spot in the state final four.
