South Carroll hosts monster region with four of the state’s top 20 dual meet teams

by Billy Loverocket

The dual meet state series expanded from two divisions to four two seasons ago. Purists will argue that it has watered down the competition, and in some regions, that is true. But in the 2A West, that is far from the case with four squads that sit in the top 20 of BillyB’s Wrestling World’s Dual Meet Rankings.

No. 9 South Carroll will host this madness as the No. 1 seed and is set to face off with a Winters Mill (No. 19) squad they just downed on Feb. 3rd, 47-21, for the Carroll County Dual Meet title. The other semifinal pairs the second seed, No. 15 Glenelg and No. 12 Middletown. Those two have not seen each other this season, but South Carroll did defeat Middletown, 45-36, in an early December meeting.

Elsewhere in the 2A division, Sparrows Point hosts the North and given results from earlier this year, looks to be the favorite to advance to the state dual meet tournament. The Point downed opening match opponent Hereford, 61-15, in the regular season. Owings Mills met the same fate by the hand of the Point during the season, albeit closer, 48-36. The Eagles will have to get by the second seed from Baltimore City, Digital Harbor, in their first match though.

There are no other locals in the mix for the 2A state title. Whoever emerges from the aforementioned scenarios will probably be greeted by defending 3A state dual champs No. 3 Stephen Decatur. The Seahawks, who were moved down to a smaller school division this year, won the Iron Horse Duals in the beginning of January with a 57-23 win over South Carroll. Decatur will be coming from the East. La Plata is the No. 1 seed in the South.

Three of the 3A regions will be hosted by metro area teams. No. 10 Manchester Valley heads up the East and sees Mt. Hebron in its first match. No. 14 Marriotts Ridge earned the second seed and gets River Hill in their semi. Manchester Valley and Marriotts Ridge could have met at Kenwood’s Best of the Nest Duals, but the latter could not return on the make-up date for the second day.

The North will go through C. Milton Wright (others to watch). The Mustangs finally got in the win column with Bel Air, 48-18, in January and will see the Bobcats (4th seed) to kick of the regions. Second seeded Kenwood will take on Edgewood on the other side of the bracket.

Anne Arundel County’s Chesapeake earned the top spot in the South. The Cougars take the mat with Northern Calvert while No. 2 seeded Huntingtown gets Southern Maryland rival North Point.

The West is headed up by six-time defending dual meet state champion No. 11 Damascus (they were a 2A school for the last two titles). The Screamin’ Hornets long running win-streak came to an end this year at Warrior Duals where they lost to Great Bridge from Virginia and South River. Their dual supremacy in Montgomery County also took a hit this year with a loss to No. 6 Bethesda-Chevy Chase.

The state power recently got some wrestlers back and looks to be peaking at the right time with a recent win over defending 4A state champion No. 13 Springbrook. Magruder (4th seed) steps up as Damascus’ first round opponent. Linganore (others to watch) is seeded second, North Hagerstown is the three seed.

Springbrook was missing a key starter a few weeks ago when they were surprised by Montgomery Blair, 34-31. That match is the reason Blair is the one seed in the 4A North and the Blue Devils come in as the two seed. Fourth-seeded Parkville will see if it can conjure some magic for Desi McNelis and down Blair. Catonsville (3rd seed) will also travel south to see Springbrook in one of the semis.

No. 16 South River is hoping the momentum from two recent big wins (Sparrows Point and Old Mill) will carry over into a trip to the state duals. They host the 4A East and get county foe Arundel up front. Leonardtown (others to watch) was awarded the second seed and will see an Annapolis team that has to be thinking upset with the recent addition of the Antonelli brothers (Nick (113) and Frankie (120)) from Mount St. Joseph.

Bethesda-Chevy Chase will play host to the West and Eleanor Roosevelt gets those honors in the South.

Perhaps the most intriguing region will be the 1A North where No. 18 Dunbar is the top dog. Injuries and illness have recently taken a toll on the Poets and Wednesday’s matches will show us what grapplers have been able to return. A Dunbar team at full strength would be a surefire title contender.

Despite recent turmoil, the Poets are still the favorite on paper to capture the 1A state title. But first, they must down Edmondson-Westside, then the winner of Frederick Douglass (Baltimore, 2nd seed) and third seeded ACCE.

The biggest challenger to Dunbar’s title hopes will likely come from the West. Two-time defending 1A state champs, No. 20 Southern Garrett, is the top seed in that region and takes on Northern Garrett in the opening bouts. Boonsboro (2nd seed) and Williamsport (3rd seed) are both in the “Others to watch” section of the dual rankings, but make no mistake, both are very dangerous teams.

Williamsport split with Southern Garrett, winning the first match at the Musselman Duals in West Virginia, 41-33, before being decimated by injuries and falling to the Rams in the rematch, 38-30. The Wildcats downed Boonsboro 43-29 in their dual meet this season.

Patterson Mill is the No. 1 seed in the East. Perryville got the No. 2 seed. Bayside collectives make up the rest of the field, Kent County (3rd seed) and Colonel Richardson (4th seed). The Huskies did defeat Perryville, 56-20, during the dual meet season.

The South is hosted by Fairmont Heights. Pikesville is the No. 4 seed and gets the Hornets to start the evening off. Carver A&T is the two seed and is set to see Gwynn Park.

The winners of each region advance to Saturday’s MPSSAA State Dual Meet Championships at North Point High School in Charles County.
