Lions cap an undefeated season with a 1A state championship to earn distinction as the top team of 2019


The Liberty field hockey season did it all this season. The Lions posted an undefeated season (18-0) and cruised to the Carroll County championship. The Lions also owned wins over eventual 4A state champion Westminster, eventual 3A state champion Marriotts Ridge, IAAM power and No. 5 McDonogh and 4A state finalist Dulaney, along the way.

The 2019 Lions steadily rose to the top of the VSN Field Hockey Top 20 and, now, finishes the year as the No. 1 team in the final VSN Field Hockey Top 20 of the 2019 season.

The final Top 5 also includes IAAM A champion Garrison Forest at No. 2, IAAM A runner-up Archbishop Spalding at No. 3, 4A state champion Severna Park at No. 4 and McDonogh at No. 5.

The final Top 20 also includes an appearance of another Carroll County school, Westminster, which roared back from a slow start to win the school’s 10th state championship as the captured the 2019 4A crown. The Owls entered and finished at No. 6 in the final poll. In addition, Marriotts Ridge jumped from No. 19 to No. 7 in the final VSN rankings, after the Mustangs won the 3A state title, the first in school history.
