Heading into just his third year as head basketball coach at St. Frances, where he once starred as a player, Mark Karcher already owns two MIAA A Conference basketball titles and a Baltimore Catholic League championship. Despite the graduation of some great talent, most experts believe Karcher’s Panthers are strong contenders to capture both crowns again this winter.
Part of the reason is the return of perhaps the league’s best inside-outside tandem in center Greg Lewis, who recently committed to Rutgers University, and guard RJ Williams. According to Karcher, the pair is the foundation of this year’s team.
“We’ll build off the two seniors,” said Karcher. “I call them veteran players. They have been here for four years. We lost a lot of games and we won a lot of games with them. They can help the young kids.”
Recently, Joe DiBlasi discussed this and more with Karcher in a preseason basketball chat. During his visit to St. Frances, DiBlasi also caught up with former St. Frances head coach Williams Wells, a legendary figure in Baltimore basketball, for his thoughts on the great Quinton Daily, who passed away last week at the age of 49.
