In a battle between two teams ranked in this week’s VSN Top 20 girls soccer poll, No. 3 Archbishop Spalding and No. 6 John Carroll played to a 1-1 tie on Friday afternoon in Bel Air.
Senior forward Maggie Morrison scored a goal that was assisted by Samantha Kirk late in the second half, giving the Cavaliers a 1-0 lead.
It looked like Spalding would hold on but with a minute left in regulation, sophomore Susan Snee fired in a goal, assisted by Kadie Hook, to knot the score at 1-1. After two overtimes, neither team could find the net and settled for a tie.
The Cavaliers move to 6-3-1 overall and 2-0-1 in the IAAM A Conference standings, while the Patriots stand at 7-0-1 and 2-0-1 respectively.
Spalding goalie Jocelyn McCoy had six saves and John Carrol goalie Gina Maiorana had 10 stops.
Last season, in the conference semifinals game, John Carroll held a 1-0 lead late in the game before Spalding tied the score and went on to win in overtime to advance to the conference championship game.
The Cavaliers beat Mercy 2-0 to win their second consecutive A Conference title.
