Michael Kimmel, who starred locally for the Loyola Blakefield lacrosse team before a brilliant career at Johns Hopkins University, has been named the Rookie of the Week for Major League Lacrosse.
A first round draft choice of the Chesapeake Bayhawks earlier this summer, Kimmel has infused the Bayhawk offense late in the season and he scored the winning goal in a 16-15 victory over the first-place Boston Cannons last week, lifting the Bayhawks into the playoffs.
Chesapeake will host the MLL Championship Weekend at Navy-Marine Corps Memorial Stadium. On Aug. 21, the Bayhawks will face Boston once again in the league semifinals.
