Robb Johnson, a one-time football standout at Morgan State University who served four years as the head coach at Pikesvile High School, has been named the first head coach of the Mount Carmel football program, which will begin its inaugural season on the gridiron this fall.
Johnson led Pikesville from 2003-2007 and posted an overall record of 25-24. He guided the Panthers into the 2005 MPSSAA 1A North Region playoffs with an offense that averaged 35.8 points per game. He has spent the last four years as the quarterbacks coach at Bowie State University, serving as both passing game coordinator and recruiting coordinator.
“Coach Johnson is an excellent fit for our school. He is a local guy who will be able to spread the word about the great opportunities students have at OLMC,” said Mount Carmel athletic director Mike Naunton. “Coach Johnson will bring a sense of discipline from his military background while playing an exciting brand of football.”
Indeed, Johnson is local as he resides in the Essex/Middle River area. He played his high school football at Overlea High School where he starred as a quarterback, but he shifted to defensive back at Morgan where he finished his career ranked second in school history in interceptions. In 1989, he led the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference with with seven interceptions and was named a pre-season All-American by both Street and Smith and The Sporting News in 1990. He was also twice named honorable mention All-MEAC and once second-team All-Conference.
The school also announced the team’s schedule for 2010, when it will play a non-confernce slate prior to moving into MIAA conference play in 2011. The Cougars will play an eight game slate beginning, opening at WEB Dubois on Sept. 3.
