Two teams expected to compete for their respective league titles met in a non-conference basketball game, Monday evening in Bel Air, and host John Carroll claimed an impressive 80-59 win over the Greyhounds.

John Carroll (2-0) established a 10-point first quarter lead behind the slash play-making of 6-foot-7 junior Jarred Jones.  Jones finished the contest with 22 points which matched senior teammate Ronald Scott for game-high scoring honors, while senior point guard Malcom McMillan netted 21 against the Greyhounds.

Ryan Ripken, who scored a team-high 20-points, rallied Gilman early in the second quarter, but John Carroll turned up its press, caused a flurry of turnovers and cruised into the half with a 41-28 lead.

After three quarters, the lead swelled to 62-44, but Gilman did manage another surge and actually cut the lead to nine with just four minutes to play.  Scott and McMillan, however, got hot again and closed out the victory.

Darius Jennings and CJ Jones each added 10 points for Gilman, which was playing its season opener.

The Patriots, who opened with a win over Friends earlier this week, is expected to battle St. Frances and Mount St. Joseph for supremacy in both the MIAA A Conference and the Baltimore Catholic League.
