Summer basketball is when high school teams make improvements and John Carroll looks to have made great strides thus far.

The Patriots were very impressive over the weekend at Gilman’s summer invitational, winning six games without a loss and capturing the team title.

After going 3-0 in bracket play on Saturday, the Patriots came back on Sunday and won three more, including a thrilling overtime victory over defending state champion City, in the championship game.

Ronald Scott and and Malcolm MacMillan were especially impressive for John Carroll, which opened Sunday’s action with a win over Loyola and then advanced to the final with a win over Coppin Academy.

Host Gilman, which was led by an outstanding shooting performance from Ryan Ripken, defeated Annapolis in Sunday’s quarterfinals but the Greyhounds were defeated by City in the semis. On Saturday, Gilman knocked off the Knights in bracket play.

In Sunday’s other quarterfinals, City topped Woodlawn and Coppin upset Good Counsel.
