Archibald drives in two for the Patriots, including the game winner


Looking to stay within a pack of five teams all within one game of first place in the MIAA A Conference baseball standings, John Carroll traveled to Annapolis’ Bestgate Park on Saturday morning and pulled out an 7-6, 8 inning victory over host St. Mary’s.

In a game that swung back and forth, especially in the late innings, the Patriots got a two-out double from Ethan Ruiz and a game-winning RBI single from Matt Archibald to take a one run lead in the top of the eighth.

In the bottom of the inning, Matt Bishop allowed a two-out walk, but got the next hitter to end the game, earning the save and allowing the Patriots (4-5 overall) to improve to 4-3 in the conference. John Carroll is now in a three way tie for third place with Gilman and Mount St. Joseph, one game back of co-leaders Archbishop Curley and Archbishop Spalding.

Trailing 5-2, John Carroll scored single runs in the fifth and sixth and two in the seventh to take a 6-5 lead, but St. Mary’s got one back in the bottom of the seventh to send the contest onto the eighth.

Ruiz was 3-for-4 for the Patriots with a walk and two runs scored. Frank Adamski doubled, walked and scored twice and Demetri Ross added an RBI double. In addition, Archibald had two RBI’s.

Mason Deletis was the winning pitcher after tossing 4-1/3 innings of relief, allowing one run, three hits and striking out five.

Damion Kenealy had a big day at the plate for St. Mary’s, going 3-for-4, with a double, a triple, one run scored and one RBI. Henry Carbone plated two runs for the Saints, while Jon Madden, Logan Scully and Eric Chaney all had one RBI each.

St. Mary’s (3-4 overall) slipped to 2-4 in league play.
