The surprising John Carroll School basketball team opened 2020 with the same way it exited 2019, playing at high level, as the 12th-ranked Patriots kicked off the New Year with a 50-43 MIAA A Conference win over McDonogh School, Friday afternoon in Owings Mills.

The Patriots, who improved to 10-2 on the season, are now 3-0 in the A Conference. Tyson Commander, who has led the Patriots in scoring most of the year, had a game-high 18 points.

John Carroll also got 15 points from Cesar Tchlimbo.

McDonogh, which won three games and a tournament championship in Elmira, NY, during the holiday break, fell to 9-9 overall and 3-3 in the league.
