Varsity Sports Network joins John Carroll School and the local high school sports community in mourning the sudden passing of Josh Hammer, a two-sport athlete at John Carroll.
Hammer, who played varsity baseball and JV football for the Patriots, suffered fatal injuries, Thursday morning, when a vehicle driven by his uncle was struck by a pickup truck near MD-22 in Havre de Grace.
Hammer, a sophomore, lived in Rising Sun, Maryland with his mother and grandmother and was being driven to school by his uncle, who suffered serious but non-life-threatening injuries. The driver of the other vehicle also survived the crash.
The school closed at 1:00 p.m. on Thursday as the news became known and classes have been cancelled for Friday as well. All activities at the school have been cancelled or postponed, including Thursday evening’s opening round game in the Baltimore Catholic League Basketball Tournament between John Carroll and St. Frances. That game will now be played on Friday evening, at 6:00 p.m., at John Carroll.
A candlelight vigil is being organized for Thursday evening on the John Carroll baseball field so the JC community can gather together to remember Hammer and support each other in this time of grief.
