Matt Jablonski who has been running at a higher level than most of the high school athletes he has faced for more than a year, proved he is the best in the MIAA once again, on Wednesday, blistering through Oregon Ridge in a time of a 15:11 to defend the MIAA Individual Cross Country title he won last year.
Jablonski finished 48 seconds ahead of second place Kikanae Punyua of Glenelg Country. Punyua, a Kenyan and a rising talent who transferred to GCS after one year at Wilde Lake, was the top B Conference finisher.
Led by Jablonski, who gave up his place with Loyola’s talented soccer team this fall to concentrate on running full time, Loyola won the A Conference team title for the second straight year. The Dons finished with 43 points, after placing five runners in the top 19. Kevin Corbusier (3rd, 16:09), Hank Wiedfield (6th, 16:26), Matt Lazzati (14th, 16:45) and Pat Finley (19th, 16:54) were the other top Dons.
Jablonski becomes the fourth runner to win more than one MIAA individual cross country crown. The others were Zac Sullivan of Archbishop Spalding (2007-2008), Tristram Thomas of McDonogh (2002-2004) and Chris Wright of Mount St. Joseph (1999 and 2001). Thomas is the only runner to win the event three times.
Gilman ran second in the team competition with 69 points and the Greyhounds were led by Will Meadows (4th, 16:16) and Chris Wilson (12th, 16:40). Third-place Calvert Hall (93 points) placed Anthony Valletta (5th, 16:23) and Ian Tartal (8th, 16:30).
Also in the top 10 overall were McDonogh’s Patrick Rollo (7th, 16:29) and Eric Levin (9th, 16:35) and John Morgan of St. Mary’s (10th, 16:38).
Led by Morgan, St. Mary’s was the top B Conference team finisher and the Saints were seventh overall. Glenelg Country was ninth overall and second in the B Conference.
