Bel Air High’s girls’ soccer team wanted to be playing soccer team in mid-November. That likely meant being on home turf for the Class 2A state Final Four.
The Bobcats will get the opportunity. Bel Air posted a 1-0 overtime decision over Queen’s Anne to win the East Region championship Tuesday evening. Saturday afternoon at 2:30 p.m., Bel Air will West Region champ Middletown for a spot in next week’s state title game at UMBC.
The Bobcats can thanks Jordan Layfield giving them a chance to move closer to the program’s first state championship. Layfield took a pass from Kathryn Merrick and put in a shot into the lower left corner of the net.
Both goalies were stout as Emily Rosenberg finished with 13 saves for Bel Air, and Liza Saffos stopped 11 shots for Queen Anne’s before Layfield ended the eastern Shore school’s title hopes. It’s Bel Air’s first state Final Four berth since 2002.
