Glenelg headed to state 2A girls soccer final; River Hill, Mount Hebron set to decide 3A crown

Loyola bound: Glenelg girls soccer is a win away from a state title after outlasting Eastern Tech in penalty kicks in a Class 2A semifinal Saturday at Montgomery County’s Blair. The Gladiators will play Hereford for the crown, Saturday afternoon at Loyola University.
The 2019 state girls soccer championships featured a rare title shutout for Howard County.
Well, HoCo is back as three teams – Glenelg, Mount Hebron and River Hill – advanced to the penultimate round with semifinal victories Saturday.
It will be an all-Howard championship in Class 3A as 19th-ranked River Hill and No. 13 Mount Hebron won at Frederick County’s Linganore. River Hill defeated Southern Maryland’s Huntingtown and Mount Hebron topped , both by 1-0 decisions.
Allie Lubitz’s first half tally, with an assist from Madison Berge, was all the Clarksville school needed. The Hawks (13-3) will play for the 14th time in a state championship, with a perfect 13-for-13 mark.
Mount Hebron is in a girls state soccer final as Sinclaire Green’s goal in the 38th minute was the difference. The Vikings defeated River Hill, 2-0, for the first time under 20th year coach Tim Deppen.
The Class 2A title match will be an all-area affair as No. 14 Glenelg and Hereford won state semifinal matches at Montgomery County’s Blair.
The Bulls from Baltimore County (13-4) got a goal from Shari Atkins in the 56th minute to advance to their first state final since 2017. For the first time since 2010, Glenelg will play for a state title, but had to work extra time.
After 80 minutes of regulation play and 20 minutes of overtime, the Gladiators (14-2) outlasted Eastern Tech in penalty kicks, 5-4. Ginny Sung’s successful kick was the difference as the Mavericks’ tying attempt sailed over the crossbar.
No. 3 Broadneck is a win away from a third state title since 2015 after a 4-3 victory in penalty kicks over Montgomery County’s Quince Orchard. Maddie Capps’ top shelf shot pushed the unbeaten Bruins (17-0-1) to the Class 4A final against another Montgomery County squad, Walt Whitman, next weekend at Loyola University.
In all, six locals will play for the coveted state crown. No. 6 Fallston (15-0-2) punched its ticket to the 1A final Friday evening at Northeast.
